5/5: SALVAGE | Saving waste bread from the trash bin (Big final Knödel party)
5th of December, 5 pm- 01 am | My home
What is waste? When does our perception of an object change, when does it turn into something that deserves to be thrown in the garbage bin? The food that is being thrown away in Europe would be enough to feed the world’s starving population not only once, even twice! Still, supermarkets throw away bananas with black dots and bread that expires “officially” one or two days later (which does not mean it is not edible any more).
The 5th and final event of the project was an open invitation to the artist’s house. People were welcome to bring as many friends as they wanted. The only thing I asked from everybody was to bring some old bread – either from the own kitchen, salvaged from the supermarket waste bin, hunted for in a bakery, or from elsewhere… We piled up the ‘waste bread’, turned it into delicious ‘Knödels’ – a traditional German dish – and warmed ourselves with some hot glögi. The main purpose was to meet new and known faces, build up new networks, discuss the ‘throwawayism’ of our society, and reflect upon past, present, and things to come… and of course, make Knödel popular in Finland!
