Finally, I got those pictures uploaded. With all the different platforms where I am putting pictures I sometimes just miss one. Thanks to that person who reminded me. Enjoy on picasa (become my favourite and you will always be informed automatically- some more annoying spam), and on Facebook (become a fan of the 5-project, same thing, only more spam on Facebook!). :P

2/5:Dinner. About apples, potatoes, Aaltos, and life

Tonight was the finalizing event of the 2/5 installation, an experimental harvest dinner. So, for first course: cress, second: cress, dessert: cress? Well, the food was simple, ingredients inspired by season, place, and roots, and very symbolic. Won’t loose too many words about it, just let your imagination go. It involved apples from the earth and from the sky.

I had asked people to bring their favourite bread and salt with them. The soup was unsalted, so those two ingredients made it enjoyable. We had rye bread and crisp bread from Avikainen bakery, Samsara rye bread, hole rye-bread from Leipä Aitta, and a Fazer Country Loaf. The crowd was mixed, with people even joining last minute, the atmosphere beautiful, the discussion inspiring. Everybody in the round of 12 people introduced oneself and talked about his growth, his background, his studies, his aspirations. 3 teachers from Environmental Art and Art Education, 9 students from Industrial Design, Ceramics, Textiles, Fine Arts, Applied Art & Design, Environmental Art, and Art Ed. 2 hrs of the talks are videotaped and ready to be edited for a final video. Looking forward to that! And: the idea to have more open dinners with discussions amongst students and teachers across departments in the exact same location came up… – me like!

Thanks to all you people who came, ate, thought, talked, and helped!

Day 4: Growing green

This really is quite an experiment. Why do those seeds closer to the edges grow like fanatics whilst those in the middle don’t? Or those closer to the elevators do not really get started whilst those next to the TV screen seem to really enjoy themselves? A biologist friend of mine said it could relate to the different treatments against fungus of the various kinds of cottons that I have used underneath the tablecloth. Or the water pooling in the middle and making it too moist. Anyway, something is growing, some slower, others quicker, and that is very satisfying.

day 3: first green/ sign-up for the ‘dinner’!

After only 2 days, there is already some green to be seen! I am expecting a green explosion on Monday… (or at least, I am hoping for one).

Since the sign-up list for the Monday night experimental dinner is not accessible over the weekend (unless you are a workaholic Taik-student who works at school during weekends ;)), you can also sign up by sending me an email to: katharina.moebus@aalto.fi. So far, I had about 6/12 people on the list (which was around noon).  By Sunday, I will send closer information to those who wish to participate. Hope to see you!

day 2: sprouts!

Little sprouts everywhere! After only one night, the cress seeds already started sprouting. It is amazing to see the process come along so quickly. At first sight, they just seem to be brown sprinkles on a once white tablecloth, but if you take a closer look, you can see something happening. Today, I also put up the list for the experimental dinner (which is on Monday afternoon 27.09., not tomorrow night, as I accidentally put in my last post!). So please, sign up if you want to discuss about art, design, life, and utopias with others involved with learning, teaching or working in the field…

… and stay tuned for day 3 :)

sewn and sown

Another day of change for the installation – today, I sew the four old bedsheets together to one big huge tablecloth, and sowed cress seeds on top of it. Now, watering time has started. The seeds start to sprout already after one or two days, so if you want to see the process, come check it out regularly. The growing process will also be documented regularly.

Last week, I have given out personal invitations to professors from the school for the final ‘harvest dinner’ (date: 27.09.2010, 4 pm), but it seems like most of them are too busy to attend. I will start to put up a  list for interested people who are either studying, working, or anyhow involved with Taik nex to the exhibition. First 12 people get in!

2/5 in the installation process

Slowly but surely, the installation is growing. Today, I added a bread sky made from reikäleipä (Finnish hole-bread) that was baked in June 2010 in the traditional Avikainen bakery in Kallio with a group of volunteer fellow students and friends. Also, there is a slow movie to be seen, showing the baking process. People still come by and continue their last night’s stitchings, and new ones are added by some of today’s passersbys.

The movie will be uploaded soon (as soon as I figure out how to do it).

Tomorrow is sewing and sowing day!

stitched dreams

Just got home from an amazing night of stitching, dreaming, chatting, having (anti stress) tea and cookies. The ‘Stitch your dreams’ event took place tonight at Taik. I had invited students from my school to come by and stitch their dreams on a tablecloth, and it was a big success.

After the first people had arrived, Sari from the Anarchistic Marttas started to show us some basic stitching methods. Soon, more of my fellow students came by, from all sorts of different departments – Graphic Design, Researchers in Fine Art and Product Design, Environmental Art, Furniture Design, Textile Design, and Industrial Design and various countries: Austria, France, Canada, Finland, USA, Japan, Thailand, Korea, China, and England (wow, I had not realized that almost everybody came from a different country!).

The tablecloth turned out beautiful with lots of different words, drawings, sentences, stories, and dreams, all stitched in different individual styles. It will be part of the 2/5:GROW installation, which I will install tomorrow during the day. People can still finish their stitchings during the day tomorrow. In the afternoon (around 4 pm, gotta leave to a class after), I will sow cress seeds on the tabletop, which will grow during the week until they will be harvested in a final dinner next week. But the hanging parts of the table cloth can be stitched on during the whole installation. So, welcome!

Thanks to Sari for her kind instructions, Linda for her big help today, Osse and Are for the technical support, 5th floor for the hot water, Martin for borrowing the table top, Cathérine for everything, and to everyone who came for participating! A picture gallery can soon be found on Picasa, stay tuned for the update! :)

stitch your dreams!

The preparation phase for the second event is on!

Today, I put up some posters at my university Taik of the Aalto University, to invite students from all departments to stitch their dreams in a huge tablecloth, that will be installed in the exhibition space next to the elevators by the main entrance of the Aalto University School of Art and Design. I do not want to reveal too much yet, but something will be growing there, on the fertile soil of dreams!!!

The installation night will take place 20th of Sept., starting from 4 pm in the afternoon, and Sari from the Anarchistic Marttas will teach most basic stitching methods, so no preliminary skills are necessary. The event is mainly intended for Taik students, but everybody interested is welcome to join and talk about their dreams!

Free tea and cookies will be served to keep up the good spirit and brain activity.

The installation itself forms the second event of the 5-series, 2/5:GROW, and will be open to public from 21.-24.09.2010, during public opening hours (mon – thu 7.30am – 7pm, fri 7.30am – 6pm), but always viewable from the outside through the window. It will end with a special event involving harvesting and professors on Monday night, 27th of Sept. More information soon!
